7th and 8th Grade Math Classes

Math is a very important subject that requires daily practice to do well.   Math is a subject that is used daily in all facets of life.   Each new skill is based on a  skill that students should have previously mastered.   This is why it is so important that students keep up and do not fall behind.

We use the Saxon math series:  Course 2 for 7th grade and either Course 3 or Algebra I for  8th grade.  There are also supplemental materials that are used as needed.

All students should be alert and ready to work while in class.  This means getting to school on time, eating a good breakfast, and being prepared with the proper materials and assignment.   Students should always bring their math book, math notebook, assignment notebook, loose leaf paper,  pencil, red pen, compass,  and protractor to class.   I will let students know ahead of time when they will need to bring colored pencils or graph paper to class.

If a student is absent because of illness, makeup work should be done as soon as possible so as not to fall even further behind.   Upon returning to school, a student will have one day to make up work if they were out one day, two days to make up work if they were out two days, etc.  up to five days.  When a student is absent, he/she should call another student for missed assignments or check the website.  If a student is absent more than one day, parents may call the office early in the morning for assignments to be collected by the end of the day.

Grades are based on total points.   Homework will generally be given daily - Mondays - Thursdays.   Each homework assignment is worth 5 points and  due at the beginning of the math period.   Any late assignment will be counted as a zero.   Full credit is given for homework assignments done in pencil that are complete, show all work, and show corrections in red pen of any problems missed.   Quizzes, math journal problems, tests, and occasional projects are large parts of the total grade.   Occasionally there are problems that may be done for extra points.  Attendance and participation at MATHCOUNTS practices (which will be either Wednesday or Thursday mornings before school from 7:30-8:00) will earn students extra points.   MATHCOUNTS will run from sometime in October until our school competition in January.   Those who make the SSPP MATHCOUNTS teams will be participating at the Regional Competition at the U of A on a Saturday in February.

Students should keep track of all assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. in their assignment notebook.   Parents should review this notebook so they will be aware of all graded papers that they should be seeing.   All graded papers should be kept in a folder.   Students and parents may view grades on RenWeb.   Parents may contact me by  the school email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .   I will get back to,parents as soon as possible.

No student should disrupt the learning of other students in the class.   These types of disruptions will result in disciplinary action.   Those students who always follow rules will have a very enjoyable learning experience and reap good grades in the process.

I know that this will be a great year.   I expect all students to work to their full potential.   Any student who needs extra help may stay after school with me on Wednesdays until 4:15..   If a student plans to stay, they need to have previously made arrangements with their parents.
