Altar Service Print E-mail

The celebration of the Mass is the most important act of-worship that we as Catholics have the privilege to participate in and, as servers Saints Peter & Paul Students have the special privilege to assist the priest in this most sacred act of worship.  As part of the 4th Grade religion curriculum at SSPP, students are taught a list of 35 items (as well as their definitions or explanations) that students would need to know in order to properly assist the priest in serving Mass. During the week before your Thanksgiving vacation students are tested on the 35 items during the school day.

Students that successfully pass the altar server test are eligible to be an altar server.  The Students that choose to become servers are worked into the regular Sunday mass schedule.  The week before they serve for the first time Chet Pawloski, Jr., a member of the Rectory staff, will train them in groups of 3 or 4 after school in the church.   This is previously arranged with the parents of each new server.

Further, during the rest of this school year (JANUARY - MAY) 4th graders will occasionally be assigned to serve the weekly school-wide 8:30 am Mass. The more often they serve the sooner they will "really" learn how to serve.

At Saints Peter & Paul becoming a server is considered an honor because altar service gives students the opportunity to assist in a very special way in the greatest act of worship of God that is available to mankind. WE DO NOT EVER TAKE IT FOR GRANTED!! Many students continue as serves throughout high school, and go on to other church service such as becoming providing music ministry at Mass, or as Lectors, or Eucharistic Ministers.
